US EMBASSIES: Are They Ambassadors’ Residences or Are They Fortresses?

(Photos: Google Images and AP News)

During my many travels to different parts of the globe over the past few years, one thing I can’t help noticing as I go by a US embassy in whatever country I happen to be visiting and compare embassies of other countries to those of the USA. The first things I notice are the concrete barriers, cast iron fences, barb wires, large number of human guards posted all around the parameter with heavy weapons such as sub-machine guns, numerous video cameras rotating as they focus on the area. Most times, I see those images way before I see the US flag; which should be the primary identifier of a US embassy on foreign soil.

As I make a mental comparative analysis, I wonder just what is it behind those walls that-purportedly- represent freedom? Why is the facility so enclosed and guarded, much more than any other country’s embassy I have seen, respectively? Why? Is this-what appears to be over-the-top measures-because of an attempt to ensure the best security is provided or is it more out of fear? Or maybe both? When did the US go from a “force of good and admiration” in world opinion to which the circumstance is today: hated, despised and cited as being the “world’s greatest threat to peace?”

Why does the US have to build it’s embassies behind high blast-resistant walls and iron fences when the rest of the world embraces each other more openly? Excluding, of course, Great Britain, which is referred to by many as the US’ puppet and partner in crime; especially during most of Tony Blair’s years as prime minister. But the US facilities as opposed to those of the British (pictured), makes the US embassies look more like impenetrable castles and fortresses instead of the official residence and offices of an ambassador. What’s wrong with this picture, I asked?

As I toured the city of Rome and passed thorough the area that is the home to various embassies, I noticed the embassy of Japan( pictured), among others, that were housed in a multi-story building that could have been thought of as simply an office or apartment complex had it not been for the respective country’s flag affixed to the wall and waving back and forth in the mild wind. Again, why is there such a grandiose difference in the way the USA constructs its facilities versus other countries?

I can only surmise after deep inner thought and deliberation, coupled with both blurred and vivid memory recall, that too often the US, which is the world’s only super-power, conducts itself as if it is the appointed world’s policeman and problem fixer; which can only create resentment and hate. One recent example was when President George Bush made the arrogant and bold public pronouncement: “We will not [ALLOW] Iran to have nuclear weapons.” Mr Bush spoke as if he has the right-God given right-to speak on behalf of the United Nations (UN) and the rest of the world combined, about another sovereign country that is also a long standing and active member of the UN. No doubt such behavior over time can only offend other nations and their peoples, and the US’ friends and foes alike. Because everyone wants to be treated with respect, fairness and dignity, instead of being dictated to and looked down upon as if they are substandard and children of the USA.

As a consequence, due to its paternalistic and imperialistic behavior, right before our mortal eyes the USA has been transformed from being a highly respected model for other countries to emulate as a nation that adheres to the “rule of law” and practices fairness and justice in its dealings with others, to now having become-in the opinion of many-the number one threat to peace in the world, and the number one enemy to millions. Thus, losing respectability in its claim to be the champion of moral authority. Unquestionably and sadly, the USA can no longer claim the moral high ground with a straight and credible face.

And so, already being the country with far more security requirements needed than any other nation, both domestically and abroad, the US administration is still out there preaching on foreign soils and trying to impose its will and force democracy on other people. Therefore, doing the very same odious things that turn nations and their peoples against her, which requires constant vigilance and enhanced improvements in security. Thus, amounting to nothing-less- than sticking it to the average tax payer’s pocket book because ultimately they are the ones that must foot the enormous bill-of course. Just look at the new US embassy under construction in Iraq (pictured) that is estimated to cost more than $592 mil; and probably is increasing as each day passes. The embassy occupies 142 acres of prime Baghdad real estate, two-thirds the size of Washington's National Mall, with desk space for about 1,000 people behind high, blast-resistant walls.

After all the precision security preparation and ingenious real estate layouts of building embassies worldwide for which most-if not all- can be categorized as fortresses, the truth is that US citizens serving abroad feel less safe than ever. Just recently some US State Department career diplomats almost caused an open rebellion when it was announced that tours to Iraq would no longer be voluntary, but compulsory. Even many citizens at home in the USA still feel threatened and insecure. Is this what freedom is about? Is this what democracy is supposed to be and how free peoples are expected to live-looking over their shoulders with guarded fear?

I bet the proverbial response coming from those of the US government would be: “Well, that is the price that a super-power has to pay if it wants to change the world for the better.” Is that truly the reason for US aggression? Or is it merely because the USA wants to make the rest of the world into it’s own image? Apparently its enemies think that is the hidden objective. And so do many of its allies, but diplomatically in private-as normally is the case.
You decide!

DAVE WARWAK: MIDDLE SCHOOL ARTS TEACHER MAY BE FIRED FOR TEACHING VEGANISM? One More Example Of Extreme Political Correctness In Teaching!

(Story and Photo: CBS2 News, Chicago/Yahoo News)

Dave Warwak, a teacher at Fox River Grove Middle School, claims he was ordered to leave class for teaching his students about veganism (a philosophy and lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose). And he believes he may be fired.

Some here in England are laughing and comparing this case to a similar one that occurred in their public education system in which "Schools are dropping the Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim pupils; a Government backed study revealed. The study found some teachers are reluctant to cover the atrocity for fear of upsetting students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial, etc.

Dave Warwak's situation is just one more prime example of extreme political correctness in teaching at the expense of providing students with a comprehensive perspective on life. Voice your outrage by calling the school principal at: 847-516-5105 or 5100.

LORD BROWNE! IS THE BRITISH MEDIA VICIOUSLY SICK? Or Is the Media Merely a Reflection of the British Society as a Whole?

(Photo: The Times)

May 1 2007! BP’s Chief Executive John Browne resigned from the BP Board after losing the legal battle with Associated Newspapers to prevent publication of details about his relationship with another man. The resignation takes immediate effect today, May 1st, instead of the previously agreed date of July 31, 2007.

Certainly, although understandable, Lord Browne
was wrong to lie to the court to try and shield the truth about how or when he met his lover. Obviously he succumbed to a common human trait and temptation to try and shield himself from further embarrassment.

And so with that said, and sadly, it was a field day for the British media! I say: “shame on the British media!” A person’s private life, by definition, is “private.” Unfortunately our society is so obsessed with the private lives of celebrities, that Lord Browne is just the latest of the many victims that fall into this category.

Thanks to the sniff-dogs; namely the British tabloids who are notorious f
or poking into the private domain of anyone that can help increase their readership. I was shocked at the number of tabloids in circulation at the newsstands when I first arrived in the UK. More surprised at the fact, seemingly, they all sell-somehow. This is quite an apparent -to-be paradox in a society that is known to be very “gentlemanly” and “respectful of other’s space and privacy.” But when taking a look at the new breed of Britons, you will see just how far reality is from perception.
Many are rude, drunk much of the time-based on latest news reports- and probably spend a lot of their spare time reading rubbish tabloids as well.

I’m not trying to defend Lord John Browne for the sexual persuasion he has chosen, nor his propensity to tell a little white lie to the court. After all he has prided himself on projecting a reputation for maintaining the highest levels of integrity and ethics. But my bottom line point is that it’s none of anyone else’s business but John Browne’s!

When will the British media, or the savage hunters, and the gullible public in general stop being so nosy to the point they find enjoyment out of other peoples' misery? Will the human specie ever overcome this innate human flaw? In my opinion, the British media in many ways are viciously, vulgarly and pervasively sick, sick, sick!!! What do you think?

Give Me A Break--Enough Is Enough!!!

(Saturday, September 10, 2005)

I’m getting so sick and tired of all the media coverage of Hurricane Katrina. Don’t take me wrong, it’s devastating disaster to the ones who lost and suffered, it’s one of the largest human tragedies in modern history, and lots of good people are working hard to try to help….. I totally get it, I feel their pain, I understand what’s happened, and I’m doing my share to help.

It’s just that we don’t need every news network, national and local, to send a crew down there just so we can see more repetitious clips, just so they can take up the already scare food and accommodation facilities down there, and just so the rescue personnel will have to take more time away from their tasks, to interview with more news reporters. There are news happening in every other corner of the world everyday, just like they did before Katrina hit, just like they did before Natalie Halloway disappeared in Aruba, just like they did before the Pope died. I’m not trying to undermine the importance of these events or trying to be ignorant and insensitive, all I’m saying is that the world doesn’t come to a stop when these events happen, and we don’t need to have every piece of news around these events, no matter how you spin and analyze it, how you slice and dice it, it is what it is. So, in case you haven’t got enough from the mass media, here’s a condensed version of what happened so far with Hurricane Katrina:

The Hurricane hit, the government was late to help;
The Blacks were seen looting, the Whites are only trying to stay alive;
The FEMA man was sent packing, the military took charge;
Cuba and Venezuela offered to help, along with the rest of the world;
Jessie wouldn’t miss the camera time down in New Orleans;
Politicians wouldn’t miss the opportunity to spin;
Average Americans opened their hearts, along with the checkbooks,
Everyone forgot about Cindy Sheehan overnight, and Natalie Who?
